At the heart of our sustainability efforts is the Selo Footprints Foundation, our registered Not-For-Profit organisation focused on creating lasting positive change through environmental and community projects in Lombok. By equipping the local community with the tools and resources they need to flourish, we help build a more resilient future.


We recognize that real, meaningful change requires collective effort. That’s why we actively collaborate with our stakeholders, partner with purpose-driven organizations, and rely on the dedication of our volunteers. Together, we drive sustainable, community-led solutions that uplift the people and protect the environment of South Lombok.

Education

eco-literacy classes

Our weekly Eco-Literacy classes are organized at primary schools in the villages of Jabon, Juwet, Dasan Baru, Kapal, and the fishing village of Selong Belanak, with 10 to 40 students attending per school. These hands-on, interactive sessions teach local children about native plants, pollution, and practical ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle, fostering observation skills and a lasting connection to the environment. Through these classes, we aim to inspire a new generation of environmental stewards in Lombok, working toward a greener and more sustainable future.

At Selo Footprints, our volunteer-led Fun English Classes empower children across South Lombok’s local villages to build confidence in their language skills. These interactive lessons foster a supportive environment, helping kids broaden their horizons and unlock future opportunities.

enniki drawing & storytelling

In Jabon, we’ve introduced a new project that teaches students Enniki, a form of illustrated diary. With the help of Ibu Yuni, a dedicated volunteer, children are encouraged to express their daily observations through drawings and storytelling, creating an illustrated book that reflects their village, family, and environment.

Community Health Check-Ups

Our health check-up program supports local health efforts by offering essential medical services, medication, and health education in remote villages, addressing the challenges faced by Indonesia, which ranks 80th out of 167 countries in The Legatum Prosperity Index. With limited healthcare access and elevated illness rates, Indonesia faces significant health challenges—our initiative is here to bridge those gaps. 

Thanks to our volunteer health workers, hundreds have received crucial healthcare.

Hygiene and Health Education

Educational programs promote sanitation and hygiene practices to empower community members in managing their health.

Youth Support

We provide dental care essentials and toiletries to young individuals, fostering habits that promote lifelong health.

Social & Culture

We support women-led nurseries by providing seedlings and compost, encouraging sustainable practices that green private and forest land. This initiative empowers local women and advances our regenerative land management efforts.

Weave For Change Experience

We organize the Weave For Change Experience, inviting participants to explore the ancient art of Sasak weaving. This initiative supports local women in the Sasak community by showcasing their handwoven artistry, helping to preserve their cultural heritage.

Natural Dyeing Class

We host a Natural Dyeing Class, where local women learn to create vibrant fabric dyes from natural materials like flowers and bark. This workshop promotes sustainable practices while fostering a deeper connection with our local environment.

Environment

Through the Selo Footprints Foundation, we have partnered with World Relief Australia (WRA) to support regenerative agroforestry and sustainable land management in Lombok.

Donations are Selo Footprints’ primary support, but we continually seek innovative ways to raise additional funds for the impactful projects. For instance, we proudly donate $2 per night from every villa stay on behalf of our guests. Our team also participated in the Stronger Together fundraiser, climbing Mount Rinjani.

We also support Selo Footprints’ mission through Biodiverse Landscaping for private villas in Selong Selo, enhancing biodiversity and providing income and training for local women farmers. Additionally, proceeds from surplus Village Garden produce and 20% of local artwork sales go directly to the Selo Footprints Foundation. The remaining 80% goes to the artists, ensuring they fully benefit from their contributions.

Village Garden

We have implemented a garden-to-table concept for Aura Restaurant, aiming to serve fresh vegetables and herbs sourced directly from our organic garden. This initiative helps reduce the carbon footprint and plastic waste associated with purchasing these ingredients from external sources. Additionally, it fosters biodiversity and supports the local community.

Greenhouse Gas Mitigation

We’ve installed 770.5 m² of solar panels, generating a significant amount of electricity each month and helping to offset carbon emissions. In addition, we utilize energy-saving equipment and automation technologies to cut consumption. Our composting and soil carbon sequestration practices further aid in minimizing our carbon footprint. While this is a good start, we are actively working to increase our reliance on renewable energy.

Waste Management

We recycle the majority of our waste, repurposing materials for construction, landscaping, and community recycling initiatives, with minimal waste sent to landfill. We aim to improve further by enhancing our reuse, recycling, and waste tracking systems.

Water Conservation

To address water scarcity, we’ve introduced rainwater catchment systems, deep wells, and a rainwater pond to source water on-site throughout the year. Our Bio Tank system recycles wastewater to irrigate our gardens, reflecting our ongoing commitment to effective water conservation.

Biodiversity Protection

We support ethnoecology tourism, landscape regeneration, and marine conservation programs. As part of the Selong Belanak Community Association (SBCA), we participate in beach clean-ups, inviting guests to join in preserving local biodiversity. Additionally, our Selo Footprints Foundation conducts eco-literacy classes to educate and engage the community. We are committed to ongoing improvement in protecting the ecosystems around us.
